As we got out of the car, we saw a Merlin in the distance.
We heard more birds than we ever saw. Thanks to a telephoto lens, I could get barely recognizable photos of a Cedar Waxwing, Yellow Warbler, Pine Siskin, and Swainson’s Thrush.
Butterflies were more cooperative, staying still and closer for periods of time: Pearl Crescent, Painted Lady, Monarch, and two Orange Sulphur.
Also stunning in their own ways, we saw Narrow-headded Marsh Fly, Great Golden Digger Wasp, Eastern Yellowjacket, and a freshly emerged Green Darner.
When I first saw this patch of Pebbled Pixie Cup, I thought berries had fallen to the ground in great numbers from a low Common Juniper.
