More PEC – July 2023

Here are some more photos of our time in Prince Edward County. These were taken in a few different places.

Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area:

We did make it briefly to Prince Edward Point and managed to see a few birds there. The birds were far away and the light was harsh – not the best photographic conditions! The light was so poor that, even with binoculars, we couldn’t identify the Gray Catbird until I checked the photos. Barn Swallows were circling and diving into an abandon building, feeding young.

We always look for Cliff Swallows on the bird observatory buildings where they often nest. The birds had built their distinctive mud nests under the eaves of one of the residences and were busy feeding young.

We thought we might see some interesting birds on the water or along the shore, but only saw cormorants, Ring-billed Gulls, Canada Geese, Kildeer and these paddleboarders.

We saw a few interesting insects along the way.

Macaulay Mountain Conservation Area

On another day, we followed one of the trails at the Macaulay Mountain Conservation Area in Picton. The trail leads through a forested area.

There had been heavy rain overnight. Many White-lipped Snails were climbing the tree trunks, perhaps to escape the wet conditions.

There were few birds to photograph, but we found other interesting creatures along the way.

Lake on the Mountain

We saw many birds in this area during spring and fall visits, but we found few birds on this July day. Consolation was seeing a beautiful show champion Irish Setter and dinner at a local restaurant.
