Three Spring Walks

We took advantage of the sun and summer-like temperatures to visit several parks. Here is an overview of a some of them.

April 11, 2023 – Kilally Meadows ESA

April 13, 2023 – Pond Mills Conservation Area

The ponds at Ponds Mills Conservation Area are part of the approximately 200 hectare Westminster Ponds / Pond Mills Environmentally Significant Area (ESA). It is the largest publicly-owned ESA in London, significant for its size and for its great variety of natural habitats within the boundaries of a major urban centre. The site is also designated as a Provincially Significant Wetland.

We were very happy to see five Common Loons diving in the two large ponds. These birds are on their way north, stopping only to refuel for the next leg of their journey.

Below from left to right: Eastern Skunk Cabbage blossoms; Common Loon; Colt’s Foot; Bloodroot; Eastern Skunk Cabbage leaves emerging; one of two large ponds; boardwalk though the wetland where skunk cabbage, ferns and other moisture-loving plants grow; Red Maple blossoms: the leaves of Trout Lilies, not yet in bloom.

April 15, 2023 – Western Stadium, Western University

We first checked the Osprey nest mounted above stadium lights and were pleased to see a pair of Ospreys were in residence. We followed the trail along the river, through the woods and back around the stadium. There was We saw or heard 17 species of birds, mostly local except for the newly-arrived Cowbirds.

There were more wildflowers in bloom here.

Trees were in bud and bloom as well.

We were happy to see flowers from Wandering Bee were available at the Covent Garden Market on April 15th. Our tulips lasted all week.

During our week of sunny weather, there were red skies at night but no cloud cover.

Music Videos

I am always ready to try another cover version of White Rabbit. This one was irresistible due to the costumes on the musicians. Just so you know, they show just as much glee whenever they perform.

Molly Tuttle has made quite a name for herself, but I knew very little about her. She used to perform with The Tuttles and AJ Lee. Here we get much closer to bluegrass, which I still love.

Then I found this charming video with AJ Lee and The Brothers (aptly named) Comatose. Yes, more bluegrass harmonies.

Which takes us to Honky Tonk Women. Pure joy!
