St. Thomas Elevated Park – June 26, 2024

Today, July 10, we are sheltering from the rain in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl. Much rain, but little or no wind. We are fortunate.

Despite the downpour, fans of Nickelback stood for hours in the mud to hear them play at the music festival in the park (aka “Rock the Park” – not to mention the whole neighbourhood:-=)).

On June 26, the skies were overcast, but the rain held off until our walk was finished. St. Thomas Elevated Park is Canada’s first and only elevated park. It is located on an abandoned railway bridge about 30 metres above the Kettle Creek Valley. The park is remarkable in that it was built entirely through community donations and is maintained by volunteers without government funding.

The approach to the bridge and the path beyond overflow with wildflowers.

A variety of pollinators took advantage of the blooms.

Eastern Boxelder bugs can be prolific, but are harmless, even if they make their way indoors. Apparently it is best not to squash them as they produce a very unpleasant smell. Here they are on Great Mullein

Fruit was ripening on trees and bushes.

Birds were scarce when we were at the park. We’re pretty sure none were nesting here.

Osprey Update

The air was clear on the morning of June 5. Here you can see the yellow eyes of the adult Ospreys in comparison to the reddish-orange eyes of the youngster. After waiting for over two hours, breakfast was served.

Music Videos about Birds

I really like all of these versions of these songs. But you may prefer to skip over some of them.

The song on this Molson commercial is not about birds, but beer.
